Biography

Memory, desire and time captured are the main themes of my paintings and prints. Many of my paintings break up the picture surface into separate canvasses without losing the atmosphere of the place. These devices are intentionally theatrical and attempt to catch a fleeting moment.

It might be a summer memory of breeze, heat and rolling waves when travelling on the Star Ferry in Hong Kong or it might be driving rain in a twilight summer in Salisbury Cathedral Close. The subject might be an eclipse of the moon in Crete or a flock of Oyster Catchers but the theme is still time captured in memory and desire.

Although most of my preoccupations are with two dimensional illusion which is centred around painting, from time to time I have created some boxed three dimensional illusions.

I have just finished a watercolour that took a year of Mondays to complete. It is a painting about time and chronicles the seasons. The title is: ‘Every Monday morning for 52 weeks I painted a new and different flower, or tree blossom, picked from our small garden.’ I then covered the flower with a mask for the rest of the year.. You will see it in the ‘Recent work’ section.

In the last few months I have embarked on a series of paintings of interiors which have an implied seasonal atmosphere. Many are empty rooms but with a hint of a narrative to come. This theme is evolving.
